Youngstown Municipal Court

The building opened in 1933 as a courthouse and United States Post Office, but in the 1970’s the building was used as a city annex for various city agencies
Research, inspections, photographic documentation and extensive inventory of salvaged items was necessary to preserve and restore the original grandeur of the building
Although the entire building underwent extensive renovations, restoration efforts were focused on the upper floor to provide visitors with the ambiance of its classic design
Other floors were renovated to include offices for clerk of courts, probation, health department, and prosecutors and a garage for judges
The goal of the design team was to preserve the building’s historic presence and recognize its significance as a monumental cornerstone to Youngstown’s downtown community

Olsavsky Jaminet Architects transformed the Youngstown City Hall Annex, originally a 1933 U.S. Post Office and Courthouse, into a modern municipal court while preserving its historic grandeur. After a comprehensive assessment, the team, led by Raymond Jaminet, renovated the building to house court facilities, offices, and a detention area. Historical authenticity was maintained through meticulous research, using original materials and replicating fixtures. The basement now includes a detention facility, the first floor houses court offices, and the third floor features restored courtrooms with preserved walnut wainscoting and marble corridors. Modern systems and a new elevator enhance functionality, while the exterior was restored. Completed in April 2018, this civic project revitalized a community cornerstone.
